Dr. Josias Ricardo Hack (Dr. JR Hack) has a degree in History at UNOESC (Universidade do Oeste de Santa Catarina – Brazil, 1996), an MA in Social Communication at UMESP (Universidade Metodista de São Paulo – Brazil, in 1999), a specialization in Teacher Education for Distance Education at UFPR (Universidade Federal do Paraná – Brazil, 2000), a doctorate in Social Communication at UMESP (2004), a specialization in Gestalt-Therapy at Instituto Muller-Granzotto (Florianópolis – Brazil, 2015), a specialization in Pschycoanalysis at Sociedade Brasileira de Psicanálise Contemporânea (Rio de Janeiro – Brazil, 2016), and a specialization in Hypnotherapy at Hypnos.Portugal / Grupo Português de Hipnose e Motivação (Porto – Portugal, 2017). In his doctoral dissertation, he analyzed communication processes of teachers using multiple technologies, which resulted in training 131 university-level professors for Distance Education.

Dr. JR Hack has performed 3 post-doctorate internships between 2011 and 2018:
1) At CPUP (Centro de Psicologia da Universidade do Porto), Universidade do Porto, Portugal. The idea was to constitute a State of the Art by the bibliographical study and dialogue with specialists on the correlation between corporal signs and mental/corporal activity in educational audiovisual. The pos-doc produced a technique named Gestalt Awareness to be used with teachers in the audiovisual setting;
2) At DECA (Departamento de Comunicação e Arte), Universidade de Aveiro, Portugal. The aim of this post-doctorate study was to investigate the use of Digital Storytelling techniques in the context of corporate training. The study involved a partnership with Portugal Telecom, namely with PT Inovação. As a result, 9 educational audiovisual materials have been developed, as well as texts which have yielded into scientific articles and one book chapter;
3) At School of Arts and Humanities, Nottingham Trent University, England. The objective of this post-doctorate study was to investigate use experiences of Digital Storytelling within the United Kingdom. During that time, institutions in the 4 countries composing the United Kingdom have been visited in order to interview researchers working with Digital Storytelling in several contexts, such as the BBC experiment Capture Wales.

Dr. JR Hack’s main publishing achievements are divided as follows:
1) 35 articles as main corresponding author in national and international academic journals. Topics include multiple technologies and collaborative learning, Distance Education, Digital Storytelling, digital literacy, and communication processes;
2) Three books published in Brazil. The topic of his first work, printed in 2009, deals with the changes occurred in managing educational processes due to the contemporary technological context, stimulating readers to develop some features that should aid mediating knowledge. His second book, published in 2011 and reprinted in 2014, is aimed at enabling contact with important fundaments, definitions, features, and historical trivia about Distance Education in Brazil, and throughout the globe.
3) A total of 9 book chapters: 7 published in Brazil, one in Portugal, and one in Mexico. The book chapter published in Portugal (2012) in a partnership with 3 other researchers discuss the use of digital personal stories in the context of corporate training, reporting part of the study performed by Dr. JR Hack during his post-doctorate studies at Universidade de Aveiro.
4) over 20 articles published in national and international event proceedings, published with research peers or advisees, as main corresponding author in 80%.

Dr. JR Hack is a tertiary education professor since 1997, having lectured in undergraduate, specialization, and graduate programs (MA and Ph.D.). Since 2007, he is a tenured associated professor at UFSC (Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina). The courses mainly lectured by him at UFSC are:
1) Educational virtual and audiovisual languages. Course offered for graduate Linguistics students. Aimed at presenting the fundaments of Distance Education, as well as the organization and planning of pedagogical work with the use of virtual and audiovisual languages;
2) Analysis of audiovisual. Course offered for undergraduate Film Studies students. Aimed at discussing theories and methods to analyze audiovisual productions, as well as understanding the specific field of film, television, and new media, and the way in which they interrelate.

Dr. JR Hack has advised 7 MA theses, 7 specialization monographs, and 20 undergraduate research studies. As a researcher, he has led research teams at UNOESC and UFSC. Within the last years, the main research projects led by Dr. JR Hack were:
1) Digital personal storytelling technologies and techniques in the context of collaborative learning. This study has analyzed collaborative learning strategies with the use of small personal videos, originated by a cooperation initiated during his post-doctoral studies at the Institute of Cultural Analysis (Nottingham Trent University, England). This research project has been initiated in 2012 and is set to conclude in January 2014. The study is performed in collaboration with one NTU professor, one MA student, and 5 undergraduate students.
2) Languages and critical reading of communication processes with multiple technologies in distance and in situ education. This study has discussed languages (written, virtual, and audiovisual) within student and teacher communication processes with multiple technologies in distance and in situ education. Its goals comprised: a) to gather theoretical subsidies and reflect on written and audiovisual languages in Distance Education; b) to evaluate and propose strategies to use multiple technologies (namely the Internet and its systems) in processes of teaching and learning in situ and in distance; c) to investigate educational communication characteristics between students and teachers in spaces using Communication and Information Technologies. The project was developed between the years of 2010 and 2012, involving 6 MA students, 3 specialization students, and one undergraduate student.

As well as leading research projects, Dr. JR Hack also collaborates with a research project by the Brazilian Ministry of Education which involves mapping success stories in establishing the network of Technical Distance Education courses (2013-2014). This project involving approximately 40 researchers throughout Brazil.

Dr. JR Hack has been working with Distance Education since 1997, having gained skill and experience with the following areas:
1) instructional design;
2) scripting, producing, editing, and directing educational audiovisual materials;
3) coordinating multidisciplinary teams to produce didactic materials.

Dr. JR Hack is also an ad hoc reviewer for several Brazilian academic journals of international impact, as well as book publishers. In 2013, he served as consultant for the Brazilian Ministry of Education to evaluate educational audiovisual materials.
